Nepal Red Cross Society has been working in disaster risk management since the commencement of humanitarian work by the Society in 1963. The whole work began with disaster relief activities and was later broadened to disaster preparedness, both at the organizational and community level.

Disaster and Crisis Management (DCM) department has been continuously working in the field of disaster management planning, disaster risk reduction, population movement, the response in disasters, livelihood and restoring family links for saving lives, protecting livelihood and strengthening recovery from disaster and crisis.

The department adopts the NRCS’s first strategic aim, to save lives from disasters and crisis situations: promote relief, recovery and resilience building. The key components to achieving the aim are:

  • Scaling up resilience building and DRR interventions in urban and rural communities
  • Strengthening organizational capacity to ensure effective DRR programming
  • Contextualizing plans, policies, guidelines, systems, and procedures.
  • Strengthening organizational preparedness and response tools and mechanisms
  • Ensuring preparedness and effective delivery of emergency response services
