The Blood Transfusion Service of Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) was established in the 1966, but initially the service was only available for the residents of Kathmandu. However, over the years blood services have been established in 108 locations within 73 districts of the country – and providing more than 4 million units of blood and blood components to needy patients.
The objectives of the Blood Service are ensuring adequate, safe and timely supply of blood and blood products through voluntary non-remunerable blood donation to meet the transfusion requirements of the people of Nepal.
Strategies of the blood service are raising motivation for and awareness of blood donation, blood collection camp management, processing, testing and the supply of blood and blood products as per the needs of patients. In addition, monitoring and supervision of the blood service network of NRCS to ensure the quality blood service is a key component.
Nepal Red Cross Society started the Blood Transfusion Service in 1996, and in 1991, the Government of Nepal mandated NRCS as the sole authority in conducting blood programmes in Nepal. The Kathmandu-based Central Blood Transfusion Service, so far being the only referral centre for the whole country, has been planning not only to upgrade the Centre but also to upgrade Regional Blood Centres of Biratnagar, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Chitwan.
