World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day: May 8, 2018

Joint statement by Red Cross Movement Partners in Nepal

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day: May 8, 2018

Today, on the occasion of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement partners in Nepal are joining a global celebration of the work and bravery of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers, and the diverse humanitarian services they offer in communities everywhere. Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers are as diverse as the life-saving services they provide through 190 National Societies.

Our volunteers live in the communities they support, from the smallest and most remote villages to the largest cities. Our services are tailored for local needs and delivered in local languages. Today, we come together to thank the Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers who give their time and expertise here in Nepal and all over the world.

Every year, around the world, the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement supports millions of people affected by conflict, natural disasters and other emergencies, through its network of around 14 million volunteers and 450,000 staff. Around the world we reach more than 160 million people every year providing diverse and innovative range of services.

Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff make the last mile effort to ensure that no one is left behind. In Nepal, for example, the Red Cross operates emergency and preparedness programmes to support the most vulnerable people throughout the country in both rural and urban areas.  With support of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement partners, Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) also provides psychosocial support to people distressed by conflict and disasters.

We sincerely thank the Government of Nepal, people at large and all stakeholders for their generous support to Red Cross activities in the country.  On this special occasion, we look forward to continued support from all our partners to expand humanitarian services in Nepal.
