PM Oli Meets As Sy during his visit in Nepal

Kathmandu, 7 September

Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli meets Elhadj As Sy, Secretary General of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in this office yesterday. Prime Minister Oli praised the Red Cross activities to reduce the vulnerabilities of the communities and said “The Red Cross activities have supported in various activities of Nepal Government”.

Acknowledging the humanitarian services of the Red Cross after Nepal earthquake 2015, Prime Minister Oli acknowledged the impartial services to the Red Cross during a decade-long armed conflict in the country. 

“Everyone remembers the Red Cross first in case of any disaster” P M Oli said “Red Cross had provided services in as the first responder in many circumstances, and I wish the continuity of such services in the days ahead too”. He further confronted his belief and trust to Nepal Red Cross Society.

During the courtesy meeting, Secretary General Elhadj As Sy highlighted that his visit to Nepal is to experience the effectiveness of the Red Cross aid after the devastating earthquake. He was glad to be witness of the Red Cross aid to build resilient communities. “The Red Cross had not been able to carry out these all the activities unless the kind support of Nepal Government” said SG Sy. 

 

On focusing the objective of the Red Cross Movement –to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected people – being an auxiliary part of the Government before, during and after the calamities with the shared cooperation of the Government, Sy acknowledged the Government for giving opportunities to the Red Cross to provide humanitarian assistance.

Secretary General As Sy also had a official meeting with the Minister of Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Padeep Gyawali in the respective Ministries. The meeting focused on the bilateral support and cooperation for humanitarian assistance. SG Sy applauded all the respective ministries for their support to the Red Cross Movement in need. He vowed to provide further support personally and institutionally in the future too and said, “I am glad to see the activities carried out by the Red Cross with the voices of the beneficiaries”.

NRCS Chairman Sanjiv Thapa, Secretary General Dev Ratan Dhakhwa, IFRC Country Heahd Juja Kim and NRCS Executive Director Umesh Prasad Dhakal along with the high level representatives of Nepal Government.

Sanjiv Thapa highlighted on various activities carried out by the Red Cross during the courtesy meetings.

SG As Sy visited Sindhuli, one of the highly earthquake-hit districts of Nepal, in the second and the third day of his visit. During his visit, Sy made dialogue with the affected people and observed various activities carried out by Nepal Red Cross.  SG Sy had made a bilateral dialogue with Chief District Officer, representatives of local government and other high level officials of the district regarding the activities of the Red Cross.

Earlier, Secretary General Sy took part in the special ceremony organized by NRCS on the occasion of 56th anniversary at National Headquarters, on the 4th September. Meanwhile, Sy honored the NRCS staffs who have worked more than 25 years for National Society, scholarship to the children of Staff Welfare Fund and awarded with the trophy with certificate to the winners of various games organized by the Red Cross Staff Welfare Fund. He had inaugurated the final match of football tournament.
