Nepal Red Cross - Earthquake Recovery Operation updates

Earthquake Recovery Operation updates

The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) is the largest humanitarian organization in Nepal, with coverage over the whole country. It is playing a prominent role in helping survivors of the 2015 earthquake and is working in all 14 districts identified by government assessments as being the worst affected. NRCS works closely with the Government of Nepal in humanitarian affairs. NRCS reached more than 3.5 million people with emergency assistance immediately after the earthquake.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement supported NRCS in delivering emergency relief to earthquake survivors and has been helping NRCS assist affected communities with longer term recovery through an integrated programme approach covering shelter, health, water and sanitation, and livelihoods. These activities are in line with an agreement with the Nepal Reconstruction Authority and in coordination with other key ministries of Nepal under the Government recovery framework.

Major achievements during the recovery phase are given in the picture.

Imaginary Allegations

We are concerned about the reports that appeared in some media and social sites last week regarding the logistics and human resource cost.

As a committed member of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) is saddened by the inaccurate stories which appeared last week in some news media about the organization and its Earthquake Response Operation activities.

NRCS Secretary General Dev Ratna Dhakhwa said, "Unfortunately no attempt was made to check the allegations with us - if we had been approached we would have happily answered any questions."  He added- As an organization we constantly review spending to ensure that money is used as effectively as possible.

Nepal Red Cross being present in all worst hit 14 districts covering shelter, health, water and sanitation, and livelihoods related activities and these involve logistic and administrative cost obviously.

Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) has been included within the Red Cross Red Crescent Nepal earthquake response from the very beginning.

NRCS requests to contact the National Headquarters for authentic information.
