Nepal Partnership Meeting -2016 started

Honorable  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, Mr. Chandra Prakash Mainali inaugurated Nepal Red Cross Society Partnership Meeting today in Kathmandu.

Opening the forum Mr. Mainali said – "Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) is a trusted partner of Nepal Government and it highly values the contributions of NRCS in addressing needs of vulnerable people of Nepal. We suppose that NRCS development plan contributes to the earthquake recovery programme and development process in Nepal."

Vice Chairman of National Planning Commission Honourable Dr. Yuba Raj KHATIWADA, Regional Director of IFRC Mr. Xavier CASTELLANOS, ICRC Regional Cooperation Advisor for Asia and the Pacific Mr Paul KEEN, acting UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Craig SANDERS, Chief executive of Nepal Reconstruction Authority Mr. Sushil Gyawali and representatives of Nepal Government, UN agencies, International INGOs as well as International Red Cross Movement Partners joined the opening programme.

From the chair, Chairman of Nepal Red Cross Society Mr. Sanjiv Thapa Said "We already reached to more than 3.5 million earthquake affected people in past one year and have plan to serve about 600 thousand people in shelter, WASH, health and livelihood sectors."

84 delegates from different organizations including Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies leaders from 22 countries are participating the meeting.

Dev Ratna Dhakhwa, Secretary General of NRCS informed that current 3 -day meeting was an intensive discussion event held approximately every two years, bringing together different partners from the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, UN agencies, other partners and Nepal Government who provide support to the humanitarian programmes and capacity development of NRCS.

The purpose of the meeting is to brief the international community about situation of Nepal, progress made in supporting earthquake affected people in past one year and, to gather further support to address local humanitarian needs throughout Nepal. 

Acting UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Craig SANDERS appreciated Red Cross activities in Nepal and suggested to have proper Red Cross legislation in country. ICRC representative Paul KEEN explained the exemplary partnership of NRCS with government of Nepal, Red Cross and non- Red Cross Movement partners across the world.   Addressing the meeting, Mr. Xavier CASTELLANOS, Regional Director for IFRC Asia Pacific region said that the world could see a good example in Nepal. "Nepal is an example how the words of World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) transforms into action."  

As key note speakers Vice Chairman of National Planning Commission Honourable Dr. Yuba Raj KHATIWADA and Chief executive of Nepal Reconstruction Authority Mr. Sushil Gyawali presented paper on current socio-economic situation of Nepal, reconstruction and long term development efforts in Nepal.
