Drinking Water & Sanitation Programme

Since 1983, Nepal Red Cross Society has been implementing Drinking Water and Sanitation Programme. In the beginning, it implemented an extensive Drinking Water and Sanitation Project in the 18 districts of Nepal providing safe drinking water to more than 14,60,000 people for more that two decades under different phases. It started Arsenic Testing Programme from 2000. It tested 61,011 water samples in 17 terai districts. For the first time in Nepal, it started providing mitigation option, conducting health survey and treatment as well. Till date, 53,177 people have been provided mitigation option. Currently, there are three Drinking Water and Sanitation Projects implementing in the five districts targeting 23,572 people for access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities. An Arsenic Mitigation Project has also been implementing in the 9 terai districts of Nepal.

In this way, Nepal Red Cross Society with support from different partner organizations has been moving ahead to reduce the water vulnerability and strengthen the health status of the community. In pursuit of them, it seeks to the cooperation, coordination and partnership with the stakeholders in the days ahead.

Goal :

To reduce the incidence of water borne and communicable disease .

Programmes :

There are two types of programme in implementation:

  • Drinking Water and Sanitation Programme
  • Arsenic Testing and Mitigation Programme

Drinking Water and Sanitation Programme 
The Drinking Water and Sanitation Programme basically focused on the following components:

Drinking Water Supply

  • Construction of new water scheme
  • Improvement of source

Health and Sanitation

  • Construction of toilet and other sanitary units
  • Motivational activities

Capacity Building

  • Human Resource Development of the community

Institutional Development

  • Capacity building of Red Cross District Chapter and Sub Chapter.

Arsenic Testing and Mitigation Programme

The Arsenic Testing and Mitigation Programme basically focused on the following components:

Testing of the arsenic contamination in water

  • Blanket Testing
  • Sample Testing

Providing of the appropriate mitigation option

  • Installation of Tube Well
  • Rehabilitation of Dug Well
  • Distribution of Kanchan Arsenic Filter
