A Major flash flood struck Rasuwa district, a mountainous region in northern Nepal, after a sudden and intense surge of water entered the Bhote Koshi River from the north at approximately 9:15 AM. The flood rapidly impacted the Timure, Rasuwagadhi, and Syabrubesi areas, causing significant damage to settlements, markets, police infrastructure, roads, and hydropower facilities.

Authorities have warned that rising water levels could affect downstream communities along the Trishuli River corridor. Preliminary assessments and discussions with scientists from Nepal and China suggest that an ice avalanche may have blocked the Lhende River upstream, triggering a sudden outburst flood. A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was also recorded at 08:37 AM (USGS) prior to the event. While the exact cause remains under investigation, the incident is currently suspected to be a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) or related high-altitude outburst event.

The flood is suspected to have originated from a high-altitude outburst event upstream in Tibet, although the exact cause remains under investigation. Water levels rose rapidly, with flood waves estimated at 8-10 meters in some locations, resulting in widespread destruction. Authorities have reported severe damage to Timure Market, the Timure Customs Office, the Rasuwagadhi area, and the Syabrubesi settlement. Significant impacts have also been recorded on critical infrastructure, including multiple hydropower projects, notably the Chilime Hydropower Project. In addition, three Nepal Police facilities, namely the Timure Area Police Office, Rasuwagadhi Police Post, and Syabrubesi Police Post, have sustained substantial damage.

The floods in Dhunche, Rasuwa, swept away not only homes, roads, and daily lives, but also left many families disconnected from the voices of their loved ones. To break this silence, a team from the NRCS, National Headquarters has reached Dhunche with a generator. More than 100 flood-affected people are currently using the facility to charge their mobile phones.

For them, charging a mobile phone is more than just restoring a battery-it is a chance to tell loved ones far away, “I am safe,” and to receive the long-awaited message that their missing family members are safe.

In this time of disaster, a phone call may not be able to stop a flood, but it can reconnect families, restore communication, and bring comfort to hearts filled with worry.

That is why the NRCS is not only providing relief items; it is also helping reconnect the hope that has been lost in the midst of disaster.

Situation Overview

The impact of the Rasuwa flash floods extends well beyond the immediate disaster zone, resulting in significant loss of life, extensive damage to infrastructure, and prolonged disruption of essential services. According to the latest figures from NDRRMA, 1,259 people have died, 5,083 remain missing, and 12,038 people have been rescued across Rasuwa and other affected districts. In addition, 5,384 injured individuals have received medical treatment as humanitarian response and recovery efforts continue.

The disaster has caused severe damage to roads, bridges, power supply systems, and communication networks, creating major challenges for affected communities and response operations. Damage to critical transportation routes has restricted access and complicated the delivery of relief assistance. Despite these constraints, humanitarian partners continue to deliver essential food and non-food relief items to priority locations through available road and air transport options, while temporary communication support is being provided in areas with limited connectivity.

According to the latest NDRRMA reports, 34 holding camps are currently operating across the affected areas, including 24 in Nuwakot, 5 in Rasuwa, 3 in Dhading, and 2 in Kathmandu. The camps provide temporary accommodation and essential support to displaced and affected populations while further assistance and relocation arrangements are being coordinated.

Connectivity challenges have been further exacerbated by damage to the Prithvi Highway at Krishnabhir in Dhading, where river erosion caused the collapse of a section of the roadway. This disruption has significantly affected the movement of people, humanitarian supplies, and response teams along one of the country's most important transportation corridors.

Displacement remains a critical concern, particularly in Rasuwa and neighboring districts. Alongside immediate humanitarian assistance affected communities continue to require access to safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, healthcare services, emergency shelters.

NRCS volunteers are installing a 5,000-litre water bladder in the Tallo Bidur area of Nuwakot. The facility will serve around 100 households, along with an additional 100 households who are currently renting accommodation after being displaced by the Rasuwa–Bhotekoshi flood.

This is a temporary arrangement to meet immediate water supply needs. NRCS is also providing longer-term WASH support, including the installation of additional water tanks, restoration of water-lifting systems, and rehabilitation of water supply pipelines.

Nepal Red Cross Society's volunteers have supported the construction of a tuín (cable crossing) connecting Indrayani Chaur in Bidur Municipality–1 with the Gumba area across the Trishuli River, facilitating safer and more accessible river crossings for local communities.
